| Customer Reviews: a very good book August 9, 2009 Matthew Dyer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great series. As noted by another reviewer, they're great warmups. I have my students do a day's problems at the start of class. It's a great way of getting the kids settled in and of maintaining skills. The book would also be an excellent extra homework assignment, one in addition to the sheet on whatever skills we're currently using. I have sent the book home for the kids to work on over the summer as a way to keep their skills sharp. I've been pleased with how much of Virginia SOL grade-level skills are covered in the book.
The only downside to this book is that the digits are sometimes a bit small, and the work area is limited. There's not a lot of white space around the problems. If your students have visual tracking problems or visual motor integration problems, this can be problematic. I've worked around it by blowing up each day so it's a page on its own.
from a Teachers Point of View May 22, 2008 Ms. Deborah Nunn (UK) I bought this book as an aid to helping the pupils I teach with their mental maths skills. It looks very nicely set out and the pupils enjoy doing these mini tasks. So much so I bought the other books in the series for all abilities.
Great ready to use skill-practice problems January 24, 2009 John Provasnik (Philadelphia, PA United States) This book is set up perfectly for practical classroom use. There are 5 problmes per day: Monday and Tuesday on the front, Wednesday and Thursday on the back. I have my students complete these as a warm up for each day.
The Friday problem is an mini open-ended problem. I post this on my bulliten board and give my students the week to work on it, then they place their answers in a box for a small reward.
The problems in the book provide a mix of concepts that are not too overwhelming, but still provide a slight challenge. The problems are aligned to math standards, so there is no worring about missing vital conent.
NOT 6+ grade level January 8, 2010 HeatherH Worksheets are brief and easy to understand, but most are at a 4-5 grade level. Definitely not 6+. Most are completed within 2 or 3 minutes by 6th grader.
