5 out of 5 stars The only math book you will ever need   March 3, 2007

Straightforward, concise and written in simple language this little gem covers it all. From basic arithmetic through elementary trig with plenty of examples, tables and illustrations it's all here. Simplifies those things you have long been afraid of when it comes to numbers. Get it along with the companion application workbook and you'll be set whether you're a tradesman or student.

I'm a UA Pipefitter out of Cambrige, Oh. I love the way this book helps out those who want to learn how to read a rule add or subtract fractions. This book shows anyone how to "Craw, walk, run" with math. It touches on some algebra and trigonomitry. Has lay-out of tubing, setting trusses, spiral staircases, pipefitting, many other areas. I'll teach my kids how to do basic-intermediate math when they go to school. This book is a great guide for instruction or instructors! Even has self checking formulas with your math problems.
Keeps your skills sharp in math if you've forgoten some things from school. This book is 6 inches by 7.5" small enough to put in tool box.
By the set: Dictonary & Guide together.

5 out of 5 stars Best Prealgebra and Geometry book I've ever seen.   March 3, 2008

This book (and the Practical Math Workbook)is a must-have for anyone considering a career in the trades, or a tradesman or do-it-yourselfer looking to refresh those marking, measuring and layout skills. Most prealgebra and geometry books teach only the processes; this book shows why converting fractions of an inch to a decimal equivalent is a necessary skill (accuracy), why the Pythagorian Theorem is any builder's best friend (squaring any project, calculating different rafter lengths from a single point).

Also included is many trade tricks like making story poles, laying out a true 90-degree angle with only a ruler and a pencil and drawing circles with a framing square. Also included are sections on laying out decks, rafters and stairs.

If the inclusion of a complete course on geometry and trignometry isn't enough, there's also sections on proper use of the tape measure, framing square, spirit level, water level, plumb bob, transit, vernier caliper, and micrometer.

Like another reviewer titled his review, it's the only math book you'l ever need.

5 out of 5 stars If you're in the trades, you need this book   April 26, 2009

This book can be a real life saver. It can be used as a general math book, but it really shines in answering questions and problems that crop up with great frequency in the building trades, that schools just don't teach anymore. It's amazing how many people show up on a jobsite, and really don't have the math skills needed to solve problems quickly, and get the job done. It provides real practical solutions, and unlike any other math book I've used, shows HOW to arrive at the correct answer without using a calculator.
Excellent publication. I have one in the truck at all times, and anyone that works with me that's coming up in the trades can count on getting one.
I would recommend getting this as a reference, and also get the Practical Math Application Guide along with it. There won't be any problem you can't solve!
